A
GALLERY of
harlequins
Called that
for their variegated plumage
recalling the pantomime costume of the Italian stage.
Boldy-patterned
& beautiful Harlequins are seen
during FONT tours in opposite parts of the world,
in Iceland in the Atlantic,
and in Japan, on the northern island of Hokkaido, by the Pacific.
Iceland is the only place where the species occurs in Europe.
In between Iceland & Japan, Harlequins are
in North America in places such as the Pacific Northwest,
and along the Eastern Seaboard of the USA in the winter.
(Those in the series of photos below
were photographed in New Jersey, USA in Dec 2006
by Howard Eskin.)
