vulpes was called the "Ladyfish" until 1949

been any "gentlemanfish".
Regarding what has been the widespread Albula
vulpes, works in 1996, 2002, & 2008 suggest that there
are a number of bonefish species in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Accordingly,
a currently unnamed species is found along the Pacific coast of North
America and in the Gulf of California.

TROUT & SALMON (Family Salmonidae)
The Yukon River has one of the
longest salmon runs in the world,
Each year, Chum Salmon, Coho Salmon, and Chinook Salmon return
in the Yukon River to their terminal streams in Alaska, the Yukon
territories, and British Columbia. The Chinook Salmon has the longest
journey, with from 35% to 50% bound for Canada. As salmon do not eat during
their spawning migration, salmon in the Yukon River must have great reserves
of fat and energy to fuel their thousand-mile long journey. As a result,
Yukon River salmon are noted for their especially rich and oily meet.
During the last 20 years, salmon recruitment (the number of returning
adults) in the Yukon River has had several shocks. In the late 1980s, 1990s,
and 2000s, there have been radically reduced runs for several salmon
species.
A federal disaster declaration was issued for the 2008 & 2009 commercial
Chinook Salmon fisheries in the Yukon with the complete closure of
commercial fishing and restrictions placed on subsistence fishing.
The cause of these poor returns has been debated with questions about:
the effects of climate change on the ocean food-supply and disease
prevalence in returning adults,
the methods of fishing used in the river,
and the effects of the Bering Sea Pollock trawl fleet on food supply
and salmon bycatch.

Longnose Lancetfish
______
Alepisaurus ferox
Lancetfish are found on West Coast
beaches with unfortunate regularity. A correlation has been found between La
Nina events and beaching occurrences. Abrupt changes in water temperature
seem to be responsible for such strandings.
The Longnose Lancetfish grows
to 6.5 feet in length.

derived from a belief of the Makah people of the Straits of San Juan de Fuca
that this species led salmon to their annual fresh water migrations. There
was a belief that killing this species would harm salmon
harvest.

Giant Sea Bass (t1)
______ CA SN
Stereolepis gigas
The Giant Sea Bass, a robust
fish, starts out its life as a brightly colored orange juvenile with large
black spots.
As it grows, its loses the orange coloration and takes on a bronzy purple
coloration. The spots slowly fade as the fish gets larger and darker, with
the large adults appearing solid black to gray with a white underside.
As with its close relatives, the groupers, the Giant Sea Bass
is capable of rapid and dramatic color changes.
There are records of the Giant Sea Bass reaching a size of 8.2
feet and a weight of up to 562 pounds.
In the book, "The Channel Islands" by Charles Holder,
published in 1910, the author claims that specimens taken in the Gulf of
California attained 800 pounds.
In the eastern Pacific ocean, the Giant Sea Bass ranges (or has
ranged) from the Humboldt Bay to the tip of Baja California, and in the Gulf
of California.
Within Pacific waters of the US state of California, it is rarely found
north of Point Conception.
In the late 19th Century, the species supported both a commercial fishing
industry taking hundreds of thousands of pounds annually, and a sport
fishery that also landed hundreds of fish each year. Spear fishermen also
exploited the Giant Sea Bass, first as free divers, and then
after the mid-1950s using scuba gear. Often the divers would target the
species when it moved into shallow waters to spawn.
By the 1970s, the Giant Sea Bass was in serious trouble. Actions were
taken to protect the species from commercial and sport fishing, going into
effect in 1982. Yet, encounters with Giant Sea Bass continued to be
scarce.
The Giant Sea Bass reproduces slowly with a population doubling time
of more than 14 years.
The Giant Sea Bass
is critically
endangered. It has been
extremely desirable for human consumption, and has had limited ability to
cope with severe over-fishing because it has a long life-span and because
groups that form when spawning are often targeted, reducing the chances of
rebuilding a sustainable population.

Toloaba macdonaldi
The Toloaba is the largest species within its family,
Sciaenidae. It has been measured at over 6.5 feet in length and it can
weigh over 220 pounds.
The Toloaba is a species endemic to Gulf of California waters in
Mexico. It inhabits mainly the upper half of the Gulf. The Colorado River
delta is the Toloaba's spawning and nursery area.
Schools of adult Toloaba migrate northward in the winter along the
east coast of the Gulf of California to the Colorado River delta and remain
there for weeks before spawning in the spring.
Adults then migrate back south along the west coast for the rest of the
year.
Juveniles remain in the upper Gulf of California for 2 years before
beginning their migration pattern. They begin reproducing after another 4
years for females and 5 years for males.
It is believed that the fish can live up to 25
years.
The Toloaba is endangered. It has been
extremely desirable for human consumption, and has had limited ability to
cope with severe over-fishing because it has a long life-span and because
groups that form when spawning are often targeted, reducing the chances of
rebuilding a sustainable population.

The Pacific Bluefin Tuna
has been considered the same as the bluefin tunas of the southern
Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans.
However, it has been said that there are 3 species: the Pacific Bluefin,
the Southern Bluefin (T maccoyii), and the Atlantic Bluefin
(T. thynnus).
Some genetic analyses recently have implied that Pacific Bluefins are
reasonably closely related to the Albacore or Bigeye Tuna.
The largest Bluefin Tuna
on record in the Pacific was 1,221 pounds, caught in April 1986 about 300
miles south of Kyushu, Japan.
The largest taken off California weighed 1,0007 pounds.

Hippoglossus stenolepis
The Pacific Halibut grows up to over 8 feet in length, and can weigh
over 500 pounds.
Hippoglossus stenolepis is the largest of the flatfish in the Family
Pleuronectidae. This and other flatfish are flattened laterally, and
swim sideways, with one side facing down and the other facing up. The
upperside is typically gray to brown, or nearly black. The underside is
typically white.
Virtually all halibut are right-eyed, meaning both eyes are on the upper,
dark side of the body.
Left-eyed halibut are rare. One study suggested a ratio of about 1 in
20,000.
The maximum documented age for halibut is 55 years. Age is estimated by
counting rings in the otolith, or ear
bone.
