List of Central American Butterflies. Part #5:

Family HESPERIIDAE: SKIPPERS

A very large family (3,000 species throughout the world) of stout-bodied short-winged butterflies that resemble day-flying moths. The adult butterfly's flight resembles a 'skipping' motion when going from flower to flower. Their forewings are closed above their back when they are settled.
some of the Skippers in the Neotropics are noted below.

    RED-HEADED FIRETIP

The caterpillar of Pyrrhopyge zenodorus spends its day in its nest on the large leaves of its only food plant, Visinia baccifera (in the family Clusiaceae), an early-secondary shrubby treelet in the rain forest.
While this caterpillar can readily be found, that is not so for the adult butterfly. They probably visit flowers to obtain nectar high in the canopy, or perhaps at dawn and dusk rather than in full daylight.

    Astraptes fulgerator,
or the Two-barred Flasher, as noted above, has a range in which it is widely distributed, from Texas to Argentina.
This diurnal skipper is also found in just about every ecosystem from the edge of near-desert to cloud forest, from dry forest to the deepest and wettest rainforest.
The caterpillars have been found to eat more than 50 food plant species in 17 different families of plants.
So, it is not surprising that research, with DNA work, in Costa Rica has shown that more than one species seems to be involved:

Astrapes LOHAMP  ______  (100C:89-c)  the caterpillar with yellow lateral spots feeds on lower foliage and seedlings, with the food plant being Hampea appendiculata
Astrapes HIHAMP ______  the brilliant orange-ringed caterpillar feeds on older, more mature leaves in the crowns of large trees of Hampea appendiculata
Astrapes LONCHO  ______  the caterpillar with a pattern very close to that of Astrapes LOHAMP, feeds mostly on  cloud-forest plants in the genus Lonchocarpus (in the family Fabaceae)
Astrapes YESENN  ______  the caterpillar feeds mostly on the lowland to mid-elevation rain-forest plants, Senna papillosa and Senna hayesiana (in the family Fabaceae).

These are some examples of variations in what has been the single species Astraptes fulgerator.
Beyond this, now, that "single species" has been expanded to 10 (or more).
