    The Blue-diademed Motmot has been part of an expanded Blue-crowned Motmot.
    The Blue-crowned Motmot, Momotus coeruliceps, is now endemic to Mexico.

    The Blue-diademed Motmot is in much of Central America, south to western Panama.
    Further south, the Blue-crowned Motmot has been replaced by the Whooping Motmot, the  Amazonian Motmot, and the Trinidad Motmot. Also, closely related, is the Highland, or Andean Motmot.    

    Another name for Momotus lessonii is the Lesson's Motmot.
